Psychotherapeutic Counselling & Hypnotherapy

Hi I’m Nic,

Seeking help through therapy can feel daunting and one of the hardest parts is finding the right person to work with. Here is a little bit about me. I also offer a free initial consultation where we can chat and explore if we are a good fit for each other.

I am a fully qualified accredited counsellor offering support in many areas including grief and loss, anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties and unhelpful behaviours and habits that can make life difficult. My counselling approach is pluralistic which means I am qualified in a range of methods including CBT, allowing me to tailor our sessions to the best way of working for you. I am also a qualified hypnotherapist.

Suffering my own losses has given me an acute empathy and personal understanding of the pain that grief can bring to our lives. I am also seeing more and more through my work that unresolved grief is often at the root of many emotional issues like anxiety, anger and low mood.

I am passionate about helping people to share and voice the devastating emotions that can follow the loss of a loved one and impact on us so very deeply. Taking my communication skills from my career as a writer, I found a way to do this by retraining in counselling and hypnotherapy. I have six years experience working for the bereavement charity Cruse offering clients one to one support with a wide range of bereavements including sudden and traumatic death, suicide, loss after a long illness, and most recently Covid 19. I also work with Petersfield Counselling Service offering adults one to one counselling for a range of issues including anxiety, depression and stress.

I am an ardent believer in the power of communication through creative work wherever possible and when it’s right for you. In my experience working creatively can provide a bridge to difficult emotions, allowing us to reach and share the things that are causing us pain or distress.

I welcome you to contact me for a free initial consultation that will hopefully answer any questions you have and help you decide whether you would like us to work together.

Alongside my counselling work, I have set up and run a grief forum, Four Little Words across social media which allows me to talk and connect to thousands of people from the UK and across the world who are reaching out for help after suffering loss. Launched as a campaign to break down taboos surrounding grief and encourage people to share the pain of their loss, Four Little Words has grown into a wonderfully supportive community for those walking one of life’s hardest journeys.

Grief Counselling

Sadly loss affects us all at some time in our life and with loss comes grief. Hand in hand they can make life impossibly hard, first stealing our loved ones and then robbing us of our normality, happiness and security. When someone we love dies, we can lose ourselves, our meaning and our reason to do what we’ve always done. We can lose our way and our purpose. We can even lose our reason to get out of bed in the morning.

Along with the darkness of deep sadness, we can also find ourselves filled with a whole host of difficult emotions including regret, fear, guilt, panic and anxiety. Unspoken words that we wish we had said to our lost loved one can torture us as we face their absence.

Grief can pervade every inch of our lives, stuffing our heads so full that we sometimes feel our brains are lost in the deepest fog. We can’t concentrate or remember what we need to do. We are exhausted but we can even lose the ability to sleep.

Grief can silence us too even though our hearts have so much to say. It can take away our words and our truth as we struggle against its power to express and process our pain. Feelings around our loss can be very difficult to discuss or disclose. We may have seen some traumatic things too or spent years dealing with living grief as a carer. But the burden of keeping all that deep emotion locked inside isn’t good for us and can make life so very hard to live. We need to find a way to get that utter unacceptability out of our heads and I believe counselling can help us find the peace we need to live on after loss.

Finding a place to be heard and really listened to without fear of judgement is something that many of us struggle with when we lose a loved one. Our sessions will provide you with a safe and valuable space that answers that need with respect and genuineness…. a space to process painful experiences and the emotions surrounding them.

I am a passionate believer in the power of communication through creative work wherever possible and when it’s right for you. In my experience exploring and sharing your grief journey through journaling and memory work can allow you to recognise and in your own time take comfort from the continuing bonds that death cannot break.

Reaching out for help can be so very hard but just by reading this you have taken the first brave step. Please contact me for a free consultation which will allow you to ask any questions you may have about us working together.

Counselling for Anxiety, Stress and Emotional Difficulties

Do things feel overwhelming or difficult right now? Is your mounting stress or anxiety getting in the way of life and draining its pleasure? Do you feel yourself disconnecting from others, overthinking things, worrying about your health, waking up with a feeling of dread or not able to sleep at all. Perhaps you are living in fear of what might happen rather than in the moment?

Anxiety can also manifest in a host of physical symptoms including panic attacks, palpitations, sweating or aches and pains. Emotionally, we can feel angry or confused too when anxiety is dominating our days. Sometimes self medicating with too much alcohol or by overeating feels like the only answer.

Counselling can help you take back control, firstly by offering a safe, non judgemental space to share how you are feeling. I work with anxiety, stress, poor self esteem, phobias, health anxiety, low mood and depression. My approach is person centred and my pluralistic training allows me to draw on a range of approaches as we find what suits you best.. I also offer a solution focused approach if that is what you want, working alongside you to develop new strategies and ways of thinking that can help you change what isn’t working.

Please contact me for a free initial consultation if you would like to talk about working together. Taking the first step isn’t easy but positive change is within your reach.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is not about waving watches in front of your eyes or making you do things you don’t want to like we see in stage shows. It most definitely isn’t about someone else taking over your mind. It is totally safe and non-invasive and you will remain completely in control throughout whilst enjoying the benefits of deep relaxation.

So how does it work ?

Our sessions begin with me guiding you through some breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation, allowing you to find a tranquil space away from the issues that brought you to therapy. I write personal scripts tailored uniquely to you which aids the process. This pleasant state of deep relaxation allows us to access your sub conscious, letting us talk to the bit of your mind that controls so much of how we think and feel. Hypnosis does this by bypassing your Conscious Critical Faculty, allowing your non-critical, non-logical subconscious mind to accept alternative, more helpful suggestions and ways of thinking.

Hypnotherapy works effectively to help us conquer unwanted habits like smoking or over eating. It can help with many other issues including phobias and debilitating fears, social anxiety, stress, low self esteem and poor sports performance. I have used it on myself to great effect when faced with my first operation and a public speaking event so I know how well it can work.

I have also seen with my clients how effective hypnotherapy can be when someone is struggling with the symptoms of grief, offering a gentle tool to unlock emotions that are so hard to express when we are bereaved. It can help bypass the silence and barriers that keep us trapped, giving a voice to the pain of loss and allowing us to gently find our way again.

Please contact me if you are considering hypnotherapy and would like to know more about working together. I offer stand alone hypnotherapy sessions or hypnotherapy combined in a blended approach alongside counselling depending on your needs.
